What did you do in school today?: Transforming Classrooms through Social, Academic and Intellectual Engagement

We are proud to announce that the First National Report of CEAas What did you do in school today? initiative is now available.

What did you do in school today? Transforming Classrooms through Social, Academic and Intellectual Engagement contains research highlights of this student engagement initiative from a survey of 31,000 students in Grades 6-12 in 93 Canadian schools.

Please visit our What did you do in school today? web page to access additional supporting documents and summaries detailing this ground breaking initiative.

Clarification: People to People Ambassadors Program, China Tour

A number of Canadian educators have received invitations to join a tour to the Peoples Republic of China organized by People to People Ambassadors (www.peopletopeople.com), a well established and respected U.S. organization that sponsors international exchanges to promote intercultural understanding. It appears that People to People Ambassadors has used some mailing lists with home addresses. These have not been provided by either CEA or the Halifax Regional School Board. We regret both the confusion and concern that this has caused. Although this is a worthy program, it has not been officially endorsed by either CEA or HRSB.

Education Canada's Summer 2009 edition is now available

Our latest issue features several articles that focus on the relationship between public policy and public opinion, and the negative consequences that can arise when these policies are drafted in response to public opinion with little research into their effectiveness.

In Rising Educational Expectations: Trends and Limits in Times of Economic Downturn authors Doug Hart and D.W. Livingstone argue that relying on education spending as a major part of an economic stimulus package would be a mistake because our economic problems are not a result of educational failures. They conclude that a?We should support educational investment for the things that it can do, but recognize clearly what it cannot do.a?

ATUDE ONTARIO/QUABEC

ATUDE ONTARIO/QUABEC is an interprovincial initiative of the Ministries of Education of Ontario and Quebec that examined the use of information technology in the classroom by comparing studentsa level of engagement, comprehension and knowledge transfer using two different technologies. In Ontario, students used a digital audiovideo simulation training module on CD-Rom. In Quebec, students collaborated with peers and the teacher through the use of a Knowledge Forum. This comprehensive report details the process and results of this unique interprovincial collaboration. (Available in French only)

We became interested in [school] early on for [child] and met with [headmaster] in September 2008 when [child] was 3 to tour the school and discuss our interest. Weave also spoken extensively to parents who have children enrolled at the school, such as [names of parents]. We attend [name of church] and [child] is currently in pre-K at [school]. We plan on attending open houses over the next few years.

Weave looked at a considerable number of schools in [city] because we both feel strongly about investing in education early and both had wonderful experiences and opportunities due to our own private educations. We are especially interested in [school] for [child] because we are looking for an outstanding faculty and challenging academics as well as athletics, fine arts, music and an emphasis on giving back. We also want [child] to be in an open, welcoming and progressive environment where every child receives individual attention. We feel strongly that we want our son to be in a community where empathy, integrity, moral and emotional intelligence, self-awareness and confidence are integrated into the environment. The overall philosophy of the school is very appealing to us, as are special programs such as the remarkable focus on community service, the Travel Program and diversity initiatives. We also appreciate the consistency of the unchanged leadership of the school for over 20 years. As members of [name of church], we would like our sonas education to encompass the philosophy of the [name of religion] faith, while embracing other faiths and diversity of thought and practice at the same time.
Finally, based on our tours, observations and conversations with friends and people associated with the school, we have come away with the impression that it is a warm, caring environment and the children who attend are smart, friendly and simply good kids.

We learned of [school] by several avenues and from excellent word of mouth. We first became aware of [school] due to my interviewing of several potential [name of college] candidates from the school. Also, it's been shown that Bush's "faith-based initiatives" have never benefited religious organizations that aren't Abrahamic in origin. Since Obama discussed the religious and philosophical diversity of our country in his Inauguration address, is it likely that religious groups of non-Abrahamic origin will now benefit from this program?

Hello, I just wanted to know how many rounds were there in the PricewaterhouseCoopers interview process for Exceed? It's the diversity based initiative for the firm. How many rounds is it? Like one on campus and then a superday? Or just one? Thanks

i looked it up on the internet...there have always been citizens siding with the wolves, but this is a wilderness problem. here is the game dept statement:

Wolf Management in Alaska

Wayne L. Regelin,
Director, Division of Wildlife Conservation, Alaska

Public attitudes toward wolf management, and wolf control in particular, are based on deeply held values. Conflicts between people with divergent values have fueled the controversy for decades, and I expect this will not change. Some people and organizations have no desire to understand and accept the values of others on this issue. This conflict of values makes setting wildlife policy difficult.

Most Alaskans are proud that we have large and healthy wolf populations, and many recognize that we have a special responsibility to manage wolves to ensure their continued abundance. Wolves do have an impact on moose and caribou populations, and this impact, in combination with factors such as severe winter weather or bear predation, can depress moose and caribou populations to very low levels leaving little harvestable surplus for humans.

Man has the ability to influence this system by reducing wolf populations and allowing ungulate populations to recover from depressed levels. The controversy centers on whether a or when and how a it is appropriate for man to decrease wolf numbers to increase ungulate harvests

The department tried a new approach to resolve the long-standing issue of wolf control. We proposed the concept of developing a statewide wolf management plan using a stakeholder process. We hoped a strategic plan built with a lot of public involvement had the potential to defuse the issue and allow development of a stable wolf management policy.

The board agreed, and we selected team members, hired a facilitator and developed a charter for the group. Twelve citizens, representing a wide variety of wildlife values, served on the team. The team included advisory committee members, Alaska Natives, the Alaska Wildlife Alliance, Alaska Outdoor Council, National Audubon Society, hunters, trappers and the environmental community at large.

From the hisroricalperspective, of these long-held conflicts, these resolutions have come:

1. The department will never again conduct widespread and continuous wolf control to increase ungulate populations. The monetary costs are too high and the public does not want their wildlife to be managed in that manner.
2. Wolf control by department personnel may be possible in small areas to help restore moose or caribou populations. In order to gain public acceptance, it will be necessary to have citizen participation in a planning process, guided by reliable scientific information.
3. Public acceptance is more easily gained if non-lethal methods of wolf population reduction are used, but this practice is probably not feasible in most places in Alaska.
4. A statewide planning effort, as was done in 1990, is unlikely to be productive. Such a plan can only provide general guidelines for wolf control. We must address each area individually with a planning team that includes local residents.
5. In most places in Alaska, local residents and other hunters must reduce predator populations on their own, through legal means of hunting bears and hunting and trapping wolves. The board and department will need to consider seasons, bag limits and methods needed to reach to this goal, as part of an overall wildlife management strategy.
6. The intensive management statutes are difficult to use and time consuming. Their emphasis on predator control is contradicted by public opinion, as represented through successful ballot initiatives.
7. Wolf management is complex, because sociological considerations are more influential than biological information. The majority of the American public and a sizeable proportion of the Alaskan public do not want the department to undertake wolf control.
8. The public supports department and board actions that recognize and provide for a diversity of wildlife values and uses. One way the board has demonstrated this balanced view has been to provide viewing opportunities by protecting wolves. The department will continue to support providing for appropriate viewing opportunities.
9. The public has an important and legitimate role in managing public resources. We must continue to discuss predator and prey management objectives with a broad-based public.

What do you think now?

I am 39 years old and have only had two jobs since graduating in 1991 with a Bachelors in Business Marketing and 2006 with a Masters Degree in Management and Organizational Development. I worked primarily in Education as a Director of Diversity Initiatives at a Catholic Institution, and Coordinator of Minority Affairs at our local college. I have been at home with my last baby and now deciding to go back to work. I really want to be a professor and help other students. I could teach Career Development, Leadership Development, Organizational Development, Managerial Presentations or General Business Courses, but admittedly, I do not feel I have enough business experience or examples to bring to the classroom. I have an interview next week and need to sell myself, what do you recommend?

CASE: SHELL ATTEMPTS TO RETURN TO PREMIERE STATUS

The Shell Oil Company, which began about 1912, had been for decades a household name as a quality oil company in the United States. However, by the late 1970s much of its prestige as a premiere company had disappeared. How could Shell regain its high status?
In the 1990s, Shell undertook an extensive research effort to find out what it needed to do to improve its image. As a first step, Shell hired Responsive Research and the Opinion Research Corporation to conduct a series of focus groups and personal interviews among various segments of the population. Included in these were youths, legislators, academics, and present and past employees of Shell. The researchers learned that people believe that top companies are integral parts of the communities in which the companies are located rather than separate entities. These studies and others led to the development of materials that Shell used to explain their core values to the general public.
Next, PERT Survey Research ran a large quantitative study to determine which values were best received by the target audience. Social issues emerged as the theme with the most support. During the next few months, the advertising agency of Ogilvy & Mather, hired by Shell, developed several campaigns with social themes. Two market research companies were hired to evaluate the receptiveness of the various campaigns. The result was the a?Count on Shella? campaign, which featured safety messages with useful information about what to do in various dangerous situations.
A public a?Count on Shella? campaign was launched in February 1998 and met with considerable success: the ability to recall Shell advertising jumped from 20% to 32% among opinion influencer's; more than 1million copies of Shellas free safety brochures were distributed and activity on Shellas Internet a?Count on Shella? site remains extremely strong. By promoting itself as a reliable company that cares, Shell seems to be regaining its premiere status.
Today, Shell continues its efforts to be a?community friendly.a? United Way of America announced Shell Oil Company as one of its three Spirit of America Summit Award winners for 2002 and commended the company for its outstanding volunteer and corporate contributions programs. Several Shell employees were recognized by the Houston Minority Business Council for their continued efforts to provide windows of opportunity for minority business owners and strengthen Shellas commitment to supplier diversity. Shell employees and retires give back to their communities through such Shell-sponsored activities as Americaas WETLAND campaign, Shellas Workforce Development Initiative, and other community/quality of life and environmental projects. Shell is also a strong supporter of the Points of Light Foundation, which strives to engage people more effectively in volunteer community service.

Discussion:
1. Suppose you were asked to develop a sampling plan to determine what a a?premiere companya? is to the general public. What sampling plan would you use? What is the target population? What would you use for a frame? Which of the four types of random sampling discussed in this chapter would you use? Could you use a combination of two or more of the types (two-stage-sampling)? If so, how?

2. It appears that at least one of the research companies hired by Shell used some stratification in their sampling. What are some of the variables on which they are stratified? If you were truly interested in ascertaining opinions from a variety of segments of the population which regard to opinions on a?premierea? companies or about Shell, what strata might make sense? Name at least five and justify why you would include them.

In a one-page summary, reflect on your personal development in accordance with the Attributes of a BC Graduate. I just finished answering the above question. I am having difficulty with it so please help me. I need you to check for grammatical errors and please try to spice up the content a bit more to make it sound better. Thanks.

High school has molded me into the person I am today. I am a world apart from what I was when I started school; I've grown up, learned a lot, and broadened my experiences.
I am physically, morally, and emotionally who I always was, but have developed my intellectual person, human nature, and social, and career development.

Intellectually, I have acquired many useful skills. For example, I decided to increase my knowledge base by learning a second language; learning a new language is an extremely useful skill to have in the professional realm. It is also helpful in terms of understanding the world we live in today. I have also extended my ability to think critically and solve problems. Finding solutions to analytical problems, criticism of articles in English, alternative explanations of results in Science, and problem solving in Math have all helped me to improve my critical thinking and problem solving skills. These intellectual skills will help me be ready to face the challenges I will meet in college as well as in my career. High school has also given me the chance to better understand the importance of commitment to continual learning.

As humans, we undergo several changes in our psychological state based on our experiences, and ultimately our psychological maturity. High school was an experience that helped me become a socially responsible citizen who acts in caring and moralistic ways.
My experiences in high school have led me to develop a better understanding and respect for diversity of all people and the rights of others to hold different ideas and beliefs.
I have been through many tough times with my friends that have shaped me and encouraged me to use positive thinking I need to be a healthy individual. All the emotionally trying experiences have made me understand that I have to be more responsible to my physical and emotional well-being. This is now, and forever will, help me to improve the quality of my life.

High school has not only taught me the basics in life, but has helped me to find my own interests. It has given me the chance to be a self-directed individual who displays initiative, sets priorities and goals. High school has helped me pave the wave for pursuing those
goals in an ever-changing, unpredictable society. With the aid of all the teachers who
supported me, I now have a better understanding of the wide array of career choices available to me. I've become better-rounded, and now possess greater skills required to work effectively and safely with others. I have a better understanding on how to work towards my future goals. All the changes and information acquired during my high school career will ensure that I will continue to be a positive aspect in culture and society to come.

If so, even more specifically, are there any national programs that many different schools are all using effectively?

What do I love about my country, the United States?
1. Strong militarily and economically
2. Excellent universities
3. Low crime rate (away from major cities)
4. Can speak my minds in public forums with little or no fear of government reprehension
5. 50 diverse, beautiful states
6. Two of our states were nations before joining us: Texas, Hawaii
7. We have great diversity in cultures, subcultures, races, ethnicities, nationalities, walks of life that can not compare with the rest of the world
8. Our initiative to crusade for struggling peoples around the world. In Iraq and Afghanistan, we're not only seeking to stabilize those two countries and build democracies, we've freed millions of oppressed people living in fear
9. Our modern, easily-accessible (and, thank GOD, not nationalized) healthcare
10. We're not Canada!

What's not so great:
1. Most of our citizens are ignorant and jerks
2. Our cities have high crime rates
3. Our public schools suck
4. MTV, it sucks!

Will it look bad if I have her write one for me?

I have to send a pre-written form to each teacher that lists 1-5 scales for:

Academic Qualities

Academic work ethic
Problem solving ability
Enthusiasm for learning
Participation in class
Overall Academic Performance

Personal Qualities

reliability and Dependability
Self-discipline and Responsibility
Initiative
Motivation
Potential for Growth

Character, Maturity and Integrity

Social and Emotional Maturity
Concern/Respect for Others
Appreciation for Diversity
Leadership
Service to the Community

Overall Recommendation

and next to each section, there is a place for written comments.
I know that I'll get all 5s for Personal Qualities, a 5 for work ethic, a 5 for participation (I was the only student to dress every day and the only student to never be tardy).

In 9th grade, I had her for a "health" semester, in which she would have judged my academic abilities.

However, I don't believe that she saw much of my community service efforts, as big as they might have been.

There is a space on the form for "title," in which she would state "Phys ed teacher," I assume.

So, will this look bad to an admissions officer, having my gym teacher write one of my recs?

Chipper, I like the way you think.
And you're right Chipper: Do you know how to spell MTV? "S-U-C-K-S!"

The question given to me is this:
"Our text suggests that cultural problems "...result from the depletion, destruction, and inefficient use of natural resources" Therefore, one would think that MDC's (more developed countries) with their superior economic resources, should lead the way in preventing this from occuring. However, what often happens in the process is the promotion of global initiatives and mandates at the expense of local cultural diversity. How do we realistically reconcile the two when dealing with this specific issue?"

Im a little confused on the question. I understand that MDC's use much of the worlds resources so I assume this is what she is talking about, but where does global initiatives and mandates come into play? Maybe I am thinking too much and getting lost in the words. If anyone could help me understnad the question, it would help a lot. I am not looking for anyone to do it for me, just help me understand so I can write my paper. Thanks!

Any suggestions? I've participated in diversity initiatives and would like to pursue this area or employee relations/communications. Am I considered too old or not enough experience? Can't seem to land an interview!

Please read and let me know how you would analyze this article:The Water Crisis: Analysis and Proposals

By Celine Tan

Water and sanitation is the first of five priority action areas under the
WEHAB plan for the post-WSSD implementation of sustainable development.
The challenge of providing safe and clean water and sanitary conditions for
an increasing world population, in the face of rising inequities, is
phenomenal.

Forty percent of the worldas population, in 80 countries, currently suffer
from serious water shortages. A billion people worldwide lack access to
safe drinking water and 2.4 billion people lack access to adequate
sanitation (Global Economic Outlook 2002).

Yet, the biggest threat to universal access to clean water and adequate
sanitation is not mother nature but corporate globalisation. Privatisation
of water is aggressively exported to the developing world under the rubric
of poverty reduction and debt relief strategies, free trade and economic
development. By turning a scarce resource into an economic commodity, the
worldas economic leaders and policy planners claim that existing water
resources can be managed and consumed efficiently in accordance with
competitive market principles. These claims are not only misguided, they
are deceitful. There are two myths being projected: first, that placing a
price on water will encourage conservation and wise water consumption.
Secondly, that market competition will lead to more consumer choice and
better services. In reality, the water sector is monopolistic when placed
in the hands of the market. It is thus alarming that the commodification of
water resources is now heralded as the answer to the worldas water woes.

Monopoly and subsidies for corporations

Water is a US$400 billion global business, controlled by a handful of
European transnational companies and consortiums, namely French
multinationals Vivendi and Suez Lyonnaise, SAUR and British water companies
Thames Water, Anglia Water and United Utilities. The global drive towards
privatisation of water services is thus pursued not by a collective of
democratically elected governments acting in the interest of the worldas
population, but by a cartel of corporations motivated by profit and market
conquest.

To make matters worse, these companies are subsidised by their governments
(and invariably their taxpayers) through support from domestic export
credit agencies, and by multilateral development banks, such as the World
Bank and the African Development Bank. They are also subsidised by
developing countries who raise credit from international financial
institutions to upgrade their water systems prior to private takeover. This
corporate subsidy comes at the expense of consumers, most of them in
developing countries, who are made to pay for what is a necessity of life.
For the poor this means no access to water.

Additional loans to facilitate the privatisation process are raised by
developing country governments from multilateral and bilateral sources.
Often, these loans are also used to finance the creation of an a?enabling
environmenta for foreign water and wastewater investors. This includes the
drafting of local investor protection legislation to guard against
re-nationalisation of the water industry and to provide for hefty
compensation for any attempt to renege (for good reasons) against the
privatisation contracts.

In many cases, corporate access to a developing countryas water system is
paved by a loan or debt relief conditionality requiring the poor or
indebted country to privatise its water and sanitation services. For
example, the IMF insisted that Tanzania privatise its Dar es Salaam Water
and Sewerage Authority (DAWSA) as a condition of its debt relief package
under the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) Initiative.

Fallacy of privatisation

Experience shows that the privatisation of water services cannot ensure
universal delivery of safe water and efficient sanitation. Privatisation
imposes additional financial obligations on governments. They may have to
bail out failed privatisation project, and also shoulder the costly legal
risks of rescinding a privatisation contract with a wealthy transnational,
even if the companyas performance is unsatisfactory. Argentina, Hungary and
Bolivia have found that the legal claims for compensation by private water
companies in Tucuman, Szeged and Cochabamba respectively, have made
terminating contracts prohibitively expensive.

The dominance of foreign water companies and the liberalised investment
climate - mostly facilitated by structural adjustment, and now under trade
agreements including those under the WTO A? in developing countries will
also ensure that a large portion of profits from water privatisation will
not accrue to the countries themselves but are repatriated abroad instead.

The imposition of full-cost water pricing as a result of privatisation will
only deprive more and more people of access to clean and safe water by
forcing poor communities to seek alternative sources of water for
consumption, such as untreated well water and water from sewage-ridden
urban rivers.

Forced upon rich and poor, consumers and industrial producers, similar
rates for water use will also result in greater income disparity and deeper
social cleavages, leading to higher risks of civil unrest. In 2000, martial
law was declared in the Bolivian city of Cochabamba as a result of
city-wide riots precipitated by high water prices. A private consortium led
by International Water doubled the water prices to city residents. Water
bills went up by 35% and some, twice that. The World Bank supported
full-cost water pricing and prohibited any use of its structural adjustment
loans to subsidise water services for the poor.

Future fears and WSSD outcomes

There is no agreement on the text in the WSSD Draft Plan of Implementation
that commits governments to supporting the UN Millennium Development Goal
of halving, by 2015, the proportion of people unable to reach, or afford,
safe drinking water and access improved sanitation (paragraphs 7 and 7[alt]).

However, the most pressing concerns over universal coverage of water and
sanitation services are not expressed in these bracketed paragraphs.
Rather, they are reflected in the general lack of political will
demonstrated by developed countries to address the systemic issues leading
to a crisis of sustainable development in the south, and the alarming
emphasis placed on public-private partnership funding and implementation of
sustainable development programmes. The relinquishing of responsibility by
developed countries is marked by their reluctance to commit to specific
disbursements of ODA and by repeated references to voluntary partnerships
and initiatives as a means of financing WSSD programmatic outcomes.

In the absence of firm commitments by governments, Type II partnerships on
water and sanitation services will only increase private sector involvement
in this crucial area. The private sector is already identified as a key
implementer of the a?Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) for All
Initiativea involving 28 countries, six UN agencies, the World Bank, and
the Asian and African Development Banks.

Another major threat to universal access to water and sanitation is
liberalisation under the WTOas rules. Although Member countries have the
right to liberalise at their own pace, and even choose not to open up a
sector under the WTOas General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS), there
is tremendous pressure especially on developing countries to liberalise.
Thus in the ongoing negotiations at the WTO, developed countries are
submitting extensive ArequestsA that seek access to every sector in the
developing world, including water services and sanitation.

If developing countries succumb, privatisation of water services initiated
under World Bank and IMF structural adjustment programmes could become
permanent under the binding rules of the WTO. Once a country is locked into
the GATS regime, the right of its government to regulate liberalized
service sectors will be diminished, paving the way for foreign
transnationals to enter the domestic market. Any attempt to reverse the
situation would be subject to WTO disciplines and penalties.

Any real effort to achieve the Millennium Development Goal must therefore
include commitments to review loan conditionalities that impose
privatisation and countries must not be pressured to offer water services
under GATS liberalisation. Essential services should be exempted from GATS.

Conclusion

Privatisation does not address the deeper economic and ecological issues of
water shortages. Questions of why there are water shortages in countries
not under water stress are not resolved by shifting responsibility of
service provision to private companies. Water management and water
distribution are also key factors in determining water supply and universal
coverage. Until and unless rich countries fulfil their commitment to
provide resources for developing countries to build solid, cost-effective
water delivery systems which support the needs of the worldas population
equitably and ecologically, the water woes of the world will not go away.

At the same time, all governments need to recognise and support the
diversity and replication of community water management systems and
practices. These have proven in many countries to be the most sustainable
approach to rural water management for rural populations. The WSSD process
and the last 10 years of the work of the CSD have called for good and best
practices in sustainable development. However, where water resources are
concerned the trend and emphasis are privatisation which has proven
destructive.

Firm commitments must be made at the WSSD to reverse the trend of corporate
takeover in the water and sanitation sector, rather than to accelerate the
process of privatisation and corporate monopoly. Undermining the sovereign
power of governments to regulate supply of water in their countries and

The mission of Whitworth College is to provide a?an education of mind and hearta? through rigorous intellectual inquiry guided by dedicated Christian scholars. While neither Whitworth nor Act Six expects or requires any faith commitment from students, both are committed to exploring Christian perspectives on important issues including diversity, leadership, reconciliation and service. What impact does this commitment have on your decision to apply for the Act Six Initiative?

Whitworthas mission had, in fact, been one of the main reasons why I decided to apply to this college. As of now, I am unsure of what religion I belong to. My situation, when it comes to faith, is very confusing. My parents are divorced, and I have always lived with my mother. Although she is Buddhist and is very keen to keeping up with the Buddhist traditions, she does not force me to choose this religion. My father, who lives clear across the nation, is Christian. I have been introduced to both these religions and both have many different beliefs. With this in mind, I have decided that rather than choosing a religion, I will expand my knowledge on religions with different perspectives. The Act Six Initiative is the perfect program that will help me with this.
Finding what I believe in is very important to me, so it was very crucial for me to apply to this program. I have already taken the first step in deciding to explore the Christian perspectives and have even begun reading the Bible to learn more. The Act Six will definitely help me in taking the other steps.

We allow our hard-earned money to be taxed to support things we don't believe in or support. We are force by our federal government to support Planned Parenthood's abortion-mills for instance. It does not matter that half of us are pro-life; we are still made to pay for abortions.

Also, why should our winnings such as Lottery, or what have you, be taxed by the federal government? The federal government has nothing to do with the luck, instincts, wisdom, knowledge, and personal initiative that we individually use to win something. Why do we let the federal government penalize and exploit our good future?

Furthermore, why do we allow the federal government to tax our personal investment activities? The federal government has nothing to do with, and does not participate in the personal investment research, the luck, instincts, wisdom, knowledge, time and effort, and personal initiative that we individually apply to be successful investors.

These approaches to over taxation are not positive reflections of a healthy democracy. They are reflective of exploitation, abuse of power, and self-consuming and self-destructive savage capitalism. I know a lot of money is required to run our government, but the government should be a more efficient and effective steward of our tax dollars. Payroll income taxes, sales taxes, and property taxes are enough to cover all government operational needs. The greed and wastefulness has to be eliminated.

If all of an individuals taxes are added together (sales, city, state, and federal) they add up to about 50% of our income. Another way of looking at this isathe government guarantees itself a 50% return on our invested (time and energy) labor. This is usury, and is immoral and unethical, yet we accept this as the wonderful working of the worldas best democracy. When in reality, we are only 50% better off than people in Red Communist China.

We Americans need to ask why and how well our tax dollars are being spent, and hold elected political leader accountable. Aborting babes is not tax dollars well spent, and $500 billion in an unnecessary Iraq War is not tax dollars well spent. The cost of wars of choice must be accurately calculated beforehand. It is extremely costly to bury 3,000 dead soldiers, to provide medical-care to 30,000 injured soldiers, to support their families for a lifetime, and for all the materials that are consumed in war.

Our government agencies (FBI, CIA, Arm Forces) are heavily weighed with white-male-supremacy, and their white-wing biases and bigotries. This has lead to government agencies that are dysfunctional, and are dangerous to national security as was brought to our attention by 9/11. Inter-agency communications were marginal at best, and intra-agency communications were close to non-existent. Our tax dollars were not, and are not well spent in and on these agencies. The answer to this problem is simple; implement multiculturalism and diversity across the board.

Middle-eastern countries, cultures, and radical groups have a point about the savagery of our capitalism, and the critical dysfunctional aspects of our democracy. The UK and USA has interfered with their sovereign governance, encroached on their lands, exploited the fractious nature of Middle-eastern cultures, manipulated cultural differences to pit them against each other, and coveted their natural resources for over 100 years. This is why they hate America, Americans, and the British.

This unfortunately is what we stand for, and is the essence of our misplaced patriotism.

GRAND RAPIDS a Federal immigration officials have completed a five-day sweep of western Michigan in which they apprehended 54 fugitive illegal immigrants who had disappeared after receiving deportation orders. They also captured an illegal immigrant with an extensive criminal history who had illegally re-entered the United States after being removed, officials at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said Thursday. The initiative, dubbed "Operation Return to Sender," started Sept. 8 and ended Wednesday. The agency focused its efforts within the triangle formed by Lansing, Grand Rapids and Battle Creek. The sweep was part of an "interior immigration enforcement strategy" Burma, Cambodia, China, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Honduras, Indonesia, Korea, Mexico, Nicaragua, Turkey and Yugoslavia.Ain't diversity grand?

Plus even more STILLMORE, Ga. a Trailer parks lie abandoned. The poultry plant is scrambling to replace more than half its workforce. Business has dried up at stores where Mexican laborers once lined up to buy food, beer and cigarettes just weeks ago. This Georgia community of about 1,000 people has become little more than a ghost town since Sept. 1, when federal agents began rounding up illegal immigrants. The sweep has had the unintended effect of underscoring just how vital the illegal immigrants were to the local economy. More than 120 illegal immigrants have been loaded onto buses bound for immigration courts.

Eugenic Sterilization Laws (Rough Draft)

Margaret Sanger once said, a?The most merciful thing that a family does to one of its infant members is to kill ita?. In the 1900s many countries discriminated against people of different races and physical or mental disability. The Nazi government sterilized many women and men to exterminate the population of Jews, but laws in the United States also permitted sterilizing people of a certain race or disability.
In the early 1900s the United States came up with a eugenics program to perfect the gene pool. The United States was the first country to establish eugenic sterilization laws. The theory of the plan was that if immoral people are kept from having babies than the society problems would disappear. In May 2, 1927 the Supreme Court in Buck v. Bell ruled to support Virginiaas forced sterilization ruling of the unfit. The motive was for the protection and health of the state. By mid 1930s, 34 states had mandatory sterilization laws. a?The number of sterilizations performed under these laws, from 1907 to 1964, has been estimated at over 63,500...a? (Franks 184). As people started to take notice, many Americans began opposition against sterilizing the mentally disabled. This eventually encouraged the state-rulings, now a parental consent is legally necessary in order to perform an authorized sterilization. Despite the changes in the law, this did not help make it clear on how much protection the mentally disabled actually have. Even as people became aware of the unfair treatment of the mentally disabled, sterilization abuse against the poor was not just over. a?ain North Carolina a where Clarence Gamble had established his pet eugenics program Aa told Nial Ruth Cox that she would have to be sterilized (at age eighteen) if she wished to continue to receive welfare paymentsa? (Franks 185). Physicians were using bribery in order to sterilize people. Back in the 1970s, poor people in the United States consisted of mostly African Americans, Mexican Americans, and Native Americans. In fact, almost twenty-five percent of Native American females were sterilized by 1976. This could have potentially eliminated the Native American race. In due course, civilians started to become aware of the discrimination against the poor and the genocidal effects. This helped renew the idea of freedom of choice. Doctors began reforming eugenics and looked into their studies more open-mindedly. a?afamily physicians would be able to provide patients with eugenic prognoses of intended offspring, and the patients, so instructed, could make an appropriate decisiona? (Kevlers 177). Although this is how all doctors should treat patients, eugenic sterilization laws eventually ended in the United States. Now, every patient is able to make important medical decisions for themselves.
I found it hard to believe that even in the 1970s people were sterilized by force. Nobody should be judged by the color of their skin or their disabilities. This is a recurring problem throughout history. Even now, racism is still a problem. Eugenic sterilization in America reminded me of how the Nazis tried exterminating the Jews. I am most disturbed by the fact that hatred among different races was so strong back then, that people were willing to kill each other. I believe our generation may not be able to change the different views of people, but meet it with a different approach. Ali was once a Caliph for the religion Islam, until his people assassinated him because he chose negotiations rather than to destroy his enemies. We like Ali, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King and many other inspirational activists, should fight for what we believe in a nonviolent way. We should not let something like forced sterilization ever repeat history. That will only prove nothing but more hatred among different races.
Forced sterilization is still occurring in the less developed and developing countries. We should help other countries put a stop to this madness. Humanity should stand up and help the less fortunate. a?When dealing with people, remember you are not dealing with creatures of logic, but creatures of emotiona? (Carnegie)

I have an AP Lit paper that i'm having a ton of trouble on. She gave us a limited list of books to choose from, and I read the Life of Pi. But the essay prompts she gave us require us to write it through either a marxist lens or a feminist lens. There aren't any women around for most of the book, so I picked marxism. I'm having a lot of trouble piecing my thoughts together to form even a coherent thesis, and I was hoping someone would be able to help, because there are absolutely NO resources out there.

My jumbled observations: (please correct me if i'm wrong, i've been studying up on marxism but I could have some misconceptions)

The scene with the meercats represents a marxist ideal because they don't have any classes, they're all equal. No predators on the island. (except when Pi and Richard Parker get there)

One of the themes is the will to live- pi as well as the animals are pushed to extremes to keep themselves alive. A marxist might perceive this as something the lower class should do, to regain its rightful power?

materialism is important in marxism, Pi is forced to become obsessed with material things in order to survive. he also has to share his material things to keep Richard Parker alive. (and complacent)

Pi and Richard Parker represent social classes (somehow)- Richard parker *should* be the one in charge, seeing as he's a giant man-eating tiger. but Pi uses his knowledge of animal behavior to become Richard Parker's superior.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm just super stuck.

Please Help me correct this, much appreciated thank you.

In a time and place where unity of all people is taught as an essential for the future of our world, it's almost unfeasible to grasp the horror of the Holocaust. No words or poem or detailed description can describe the level of terror and oppression that took place. Fugitive Pieces and Schindleras List both portray protagonists who are courageous and protective father figures. Both works look at the persecution and massacre of millions of Jews. Between Fugitive Pieces and Schindleras List there are numerous similarities but nevertheless there are several prominent differences such as the narrative point of view. The two works of Fugitive Pieces by Anne Michaels and Schindleras List by Steven Spielberg display striking similarities in their main themes and settings; however, there is an intriguing contrast between the two texts in the scope and scale of the two narratives.
Firstly both texts feature protagonists who are courageous and protective father figures. Athos Roussos, one of the main characters in Fugitive Pieces, rescues Jacob from the Nazis and becomes like a father to him. a?I will be your kumbaros, your father, the marriage sponsor for you and your sons.......a? (Michaels, Pg 14). Athos takes Jacob to Greece, to help him forget the memories of his parentas tragic death. He provides Jacob with the luxuries of exotic food, shelter and fashionable clothing. Athos goes as far as to risk his own life by taking in Jacob and protecting him from the Nazis. Similarly in Schindleras List, Oscar Schindler saves the lives of over 1100 Jews from oppression, murder and torture. Schindler bribes and befriends the Nazi authorities to liberate the Jews from Labour Camps and bring them to safety. Using every ounce of his money and at the verge of bankruptcy, Schindler is still motivated to save every possible life. Oscar putas his own life and reputation in danger to save the lives of hundreds of Jews, which at the time was considered treason and punishable by death.
Secondly both works of Fugitive Pieces and Schindleras List look at the brutal murders and the torture of innocent people of Jewish decent. Jacobas parents were mercilessly murdered by the Nazias. Jacobas mother was beaten and raped before being shot to death. Jacobas father was forced to witness the rape of his wife before being murdered himself. a?He turned his head, and tears ran down his face like water coming down from a waterfall.a? (Michaels, Pg 12). Jacobas sister is tortured, strangled, and eventually taken to a concentration camp where she is gassed to death. Comparably in Schindleras List there is the mass murder, persecution and starvation of millions of Jews. A lot of the Jews are gassed, beaten, used as punching bags and shot to death as part of a game. Some of them are deprived of food and starved until they are overcome by malnutrition or eventually die from hunger. They are forced to work as house hold slaves non-stop while being paid nothing. Innocent women and children are put through excruciating mental and physiological pain, while the men are accused and punished barbarically for crimes they did not commit. Both works illustrate with in depth detail of the excruciating murder and torture of millions of Jews.
Lastly although there are many resemblances between Fugitive Pieces and Schindleras List there is a very visible distinction in the view point of both works. Fugitive Pieces is a first person narrative. It is a personal account of Jacobas survival of the Holocaust and his reintegration into society. Jacob talks about witnessing the murder of his parents at a very young age and the emotional scars he was forced to cope with after the deaths. Jacob is rescued by Athos from the Jungles of Biskupin, Germany and taken to Greece. He describes a process of healing as he tires to overcome his fears of being taken away by Nazis and his guilt of not standing up to the Nazias at the time of his parentas death. Jacob slowly beings to reform his life while adjusting to the daily norms of society with the help of Athos and his new friends. While on the contrary Schindleras List is a third person narrative and depicts the history of not one person but of many people during the unfortunate times of the Holocaust. Schindleras List looks at individual events such as the gassing of thousands of Jews. It shows a very vivid picture inside the Ghettoas and the horrible condition in which the Jews are forced to live in. The text looks at individual stories of different families and how they survived and coped with the terrifying events of the Holocaust. Schindleras List looks at the role of Oscar Schindler in the salvation of 1100 Jews. The text examines the heroics of Oscar Schindler and how he used his money and reputation to buy the Jews out of Concentration Camps and bring them to safety. Fugitive Pieces and Schindleras List is differ in many wa

Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told

Separately, Howard angered some Australian Muslims on

Quote: 'IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT. Take It Or

we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the
terrorist attacks on Bali , we have experienced a surge in
patriotism by the majority of Australians.'

'This culture has been developed over two centuries of
struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women
who have sought freedom. We speak mainly ENGLISH, not
Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or
any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of
our society, Learn the Language!'

'Most Australians believe in God. This is not some
Christian, right wing, political push, but a fact, because
Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded
this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly
appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If
God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of
the world as your new home, because God is part of our
culture.'

'We will accept your beliefs, and will not question why.
All we ask is that you accept ours, and live in harmony and
peaceful enjoyment with us.'

'This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we
will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this. But once
you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our
Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life,
I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great
Australian freedom, THE RIGHT TO LEAVE.'

'If you aren't happy here then LEAVE. We didn't force you
to come here. You asked to be here. So accept the country
YOU accepted.'
Maybe if we circulate this , American citizens will find
the backbone to start speaking and voicing the same truths.

Gender-Based Roles and 18th Century Literature

Profound evidence of the different roles women and men have in society are etched in the sands of time. These differences precede even written records. Ordained by a higher authority are the physical attributes that distinguish genders from one another. Grand differences to some, minimal to others are these displayed differences. Still no matter the amount of importance placed on the physical attributes, man has taken it upon himself to use gender criteria in assigning acceptable and unacceptable roles for genders, namely the roles of women in society. The critical eye examines the behaviors of women, deeming certain behaviors as moral and immoral. Acts that may leave permanent stains on a womanas character, if performed by a man, has often left him unmarked. This double-standard has been the subject of many works. During the 1700as women became much more vocal about their growing concern on the matter. Eliza Haywood, and Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, were a few of the women during this time period who wrote about this double-standard. Using the works they have left behind I will provide evidence of this gender double-standard that is found within their pieces.
Eliza Haywood, rather than directly approach the topic, uses the female character Fantomina to show how women who do not guard their chastity will end up shamed for not being more cautious, while the men they lay with remain free from judgments. Early on the reader realizes that Fantomina is a distinguished and privileged young lady. She is a member of high society; hence all her actions must be meticulously calculated. Still even within her class people become subject to temptation. Curiosity initially leads her into the world prostitution, simply for a closer look. Human desires caused her to become entrapped in it. There she meets a man, Beauplaisir, who is of similar ranking in the world of the elite. She dares not to identify herself a?three or four times did she open her mouth to confess her real quality; but the influence of her ill stars prevented ita? (Haywood 1181). Due to her fear of compromising her reputation she was unable to speak of her true personage. Beauplaisir, however is granted this freedom, because although he and Fantomina are similar in many ways, his gender afforded him more rights in regards to his behavior, than they did her. He had the liberty to come and go to any such place as he pleased, including brothels, without ever having to worry that ill discourse regarding his character will ever being uttered. Fantomina is certain that if her true identity is revealed she will be forever shamed.
Just the possibility of having someone recognize her was enough to make Fantomina take great measures so as not to be known. She feels as long as she is never discovered she is as free as the others whom she is imitating. Yet, even with her identity a mystery it is still difficult for her to cope with the loss of her virginity once it is gone. We see the true feelings of Fantomina here, when that loss is described as such, a?in fine, she was undone; and he gained victory, so highly rapturous, that had he known over whom, scarce could he have triumphed morea? (1182). Clearly, she has lost something and he has won, and the win would be doubly satisfying if he knew who she really was. This certainly raises the questions a?what makes him victorious when they have both partaken in the same deed?a? His gender is what gives him the upper hand. From that point on we see only a decline in Fantominaas once confident demeanor and arrogance in Beauplaisiras. When all is discovered and the truth can no longer be hidden, she is sent off and he remains clear and untainted by the dirty deeds that he too was an equal accessory to. Though this story is fiction, the theme is very real. The worldly sins of a woman do not go unpunished, while men are free from the wrath of other men. Haywood was not the only one who felt it necessary to address this distressing topic.
In the poem Epistle from Mrs. Yonge to Her Husband, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu writes of this double-standard. Montaguas Mrs. Yonge is well aware of the great societal differences and is displaying her qualms with these unfair practices that force women into a victim position. Mrs. Yonge acknowledges that women are the weaker of the sexes, but does not see this as a reason for women to suffer. She says a?too, too severely laws of honor bind/the weak submissive sex of womankinda? (Montagu 1200). In these lines she states that the a?laws of honor binda? women to their husbands in marriage, but women suffer not because they are married it is because they are weak and submissive, rarely ever speaking up about the injustices they suffer in their marital lives. Mrs.Yonge would like an explanation for the inequalities in these gender assignments a?from whence is this unjust distinction grown?/Are we not formed with passions like your own?/Nature wi

Distant Waves

The beginning of this book takes place at a sAance Janeas mother is performing. After contacting a deeply missed loved one, Maude, her mother, and her children, Mimi, Jane, Emma, and Amelie, plus, an unborn, set out towards home. But on their way, the ground violently shakes, and a young man, whom is later to be found out to be Nikola Tesla comes and brings the newly-widowed family into a building, where he proceeds to smash an alarm clock sized machine that resulted in cease of the shaking. The family soon learns about his attempt to study vibrational patterns that caused the shaking. And soon, the young group set off for a village of physic mediums near buffalo. There, Jane becomes enthused with the life of Nikola Tesla, and over 12 years collects information about his life from newspapers in a scrapbook. At the age of sixteen, Jane and her eighteen-year-old sister Mimi set off for New York City, where the famed Tesla was staying. Tesla remembered her, and, Jane was thrilled. Jane also sparked up a small relationship with Tesla assistant, Thad, and when Mimi runs off to Europe with Mr. Guggenheim and his mistress, Jane is forced to leave New York City, and return to her mother. But before she leaves, Thad promises her that he would write. Jane patiently awaits a letter from Thad over the next six months but only receives a book, with no inscription as to whom it was from. Soon, her mother is invited to a Physic Mediums convention in London, and the whole family, along with the now 12-year-old baby Blythe, travels to London. As a sAance is conducted with the twins Emma and Amelie and Maude, Emma is transformed into some kind of ghost of the former Queen Victoria, and warns everyone of the upcoming World War One. After the convention, the small all girl family find themselves seeing Mimi and thinking sheas a ghost. But, as it turned out, she was alive, and sought out them. In the time she was gone, Mimi fell in love with Mr. Guggenheimas valet and is bought a ticket on the doomed Titanic. Soon, everyone but Maude find a way onto the Titanic. As soon as the twins are onboard, they start having problems, and see great problems with the shipas future. A young Chinese girl named Li goes and fetches help, and who else is the help but Janeas crush, Thad. After the girls are sedated, Jane and Thad spark up a relationship, and soon find themselves agreeing to engagement on the date of Mimias wedding, April 14, onboard the Titanic. All is well; until Nikolaas newly built a?earthquake machinea? disrupts the ship, and adds to the damage of the iceberg. In an act to save everyone from imminent death, Tesla unveils his time machine, and sends him and Jane 2 hours and 40 minutes into the future. The photograph of the people is instantly familiar to Jane, and she hurries to cover the story. When she arrives, she is reunited with Mimi, and, a little later, Thad. Apparently, Teslaas invention forwarded Thad and Mimi Two years and 4 months into the future. Mimi is stricken by Victoras death but Thad and Jane finally have reached a happy ending.

****I'm asking this question for a friend because I want to see how other people answer to his question. This is not my question, but in wording your answer, you can address your answer to me as if I asked the question****

Girls seem to get upset about double-standards, but I don't think there is anything wrong with a man secretly cheating on his girlfriend/wife and then simultaneously forbidding or expecting his girlfriend/wife not to see other men.

Generally, a male's appetite for sex is so much larger than a woman's flimsy libido.

I want to have sex with every extremely-attractive girl I see, and I don't find that to be incompatible with the loving relationship I have with my girlfriend.

I don't think it's wrong that I hold a double standard, and I would NEVER allow her to see another man. That's just the way it is---I'm selfish---is this a crime, a sin? In fact, I expect I'd become violently outraged if she even thought about someone else. I'd become angry if she even told me that she had a dream (something outside her control) about someone else, and I wouldn't feel ashamed to express this anger.

My libido demands sex at least 6 days a week. Hers demands sex 1-2 days a week. And the problem is that when she is busy with exams, her stress eliminates her libido entirely. I hate to force her to have sex when she doesn't want to---it makes her upset. On the other hand, when I'm studying for exams, I want to have sex even more to shed off some of the stress.

I'm happier keeping our warm relationship; she's happy being naive, innocent, and feeling the illusion of my loyal love. However, I'm happy executing my sex drive with frequency, that is, with other women (however, I will certainly make sure that I prevent std's however I can, and if I ever got an std, then I would admit my unfaithful/adulterous behavior to my gf).

Why should a man develop a conscience about secreting having sex with other women and holding a double standard? Why do women think this is incompatible with "love"?

I actually feel like I'd love my girlfriend more if I didn't resent her inadequate, female appetite for sex. I almost think that the inadequate sexual appetite women have is evolutionarily designed to send their men off to secretly have sex with other women!
I am asking this question for a MALE friend, that came up in an argument between us. This question details his position. What do you think?

I hate to be contraversial, but as a ex service member(3 1/2 years out) I have some stuff to get on my chest. I also want the men and women who are currently in the armed forces to become aware of how they may not be looked at the same once they get out the service. How or why? Well in my opinion and some based on personal experiences, I will list a few reasons below.

1) It is the military personnel who stimulates the local and near economies around military installations. These businesses thrive off the military to stay afloat. They are all up in a servicemembers check book because they know they have a steady income and know that they can call the commanders of service members if they are delinquent on payments. However once the servicemember gets out where are these private industry businesses when the servicemember needs a job? Will they offer the same credit opportunities when the servicemember is no longer in? Of course not! Apparently these private sector industries does not appreciate the fact that military members helped keep them in business.

2. The best time to get arrested or have to deal with the court system is when you are in the service(especially if you are a minority). True Story! But once you are out you may be screwed. The court system knows its place by not mistreating the military members because get their town or city gets alot of their funding and economic hope through military members(Especially in military towns). However once your out(especially if you are a minority), you are looked at as a criminal by the courts until proven otherwise. You may be a veteran but are worthless cause you know longer wear the uniform. True Story!

3. The military keeps housing markets afloat by buying and renting properties. When you are wearing the uniform you are guaranteed to get approved for the rental property without them even doing verifications. Buying may not be as simple but the banks love lending to military personnel. HOWEVER, once you get out it is a totally different story. You have lost all your financial and credit credability. True Story!

4. No more "thank you for your service" from people or women chasing after you once you take that uniform off. LOL.

Does everyone see the point I am trying to make? I that there are ACTIVE DUTY servicemembers reading. I am not being negative but it's just reality. Even by reading other posts by veterans I can safely say that military experience does not mean nothing to employers especially in this tight job market Especially in private industry. The only jobs I had were working for Defense contractors whom I praise for hiring mainly vets. I gave up trying to get Government employment. It is easy as hell to get in the military but hard to obtain government employment! What a conspiracy ha? All I am demanding is that America takes better care of Veterans. YES I do have a small since of entitlement especially in the job market. I served my country then I went and to college and obtained a vocational degree and my resume is getting passed up for hundreds of jobs in here in Dallas/Fort Worth. There should be no reason why veterans are not prioritized for getting good paying jobs with livable wages before those who have not served. Im talking regular jobs not jobs which requires mandatory training or schooling. This is BS and you folks in private industry should be ashamed of yourselves. I regret and I am sure alot of other veterans regret serving people like you all. So take them yellow ribbons off your cars, stop sending care packages overseas and try doing something that would really help out a VET and give us priority for JOBS!!!!

I know, it is rather long, but I tried to make it entertaining. Besides, it isn't even about vampires!

I need to know if this is on a professional level, as I would like to become published someday.

Upon entering the room, he had almost forgotten the troubles pursuing him. The vast hall was unlike any of the levels he hurried past below, and unlike any that he had ever occupied in his life, for that matter. It was a Parthenon inspired design, though with a low ceiling, and bore an Olympian grace which stood proudly over the skyline of the city. In standing in its notice you could tell this wasn't here solely for external pleasantries merely to delight the eye. Its unlimited wealth not only purchased material extravagance, but an otherworldly peace of mind and comfort for the insecurities of the soul that riches usually left callus and hollow. This was where men could ascend, freed of all their earthly problems, to sit in undisturbed reverence among themselves.

As he stood, stricken, his sense of direction and place was forgone as his eyes gazed transfixed at a point between the columns. In nature's waning hours she gilded everything with natural luxury, and seemed to crown its head of royalty. There are, at certain rare moments, after life has lost its value and despite all its mystery's ignored, that you experience something which imparts upon you a fleeting gift of illumination. a?This opulence -no- this heavenly condition, wasn't intended for man.a? His mind elevated to grasp, in vain, the spiritual uncertainties that tantalized the world.

He walked toward the far side of the rectangular room. The golden rays were enticing him to move, to suck him in and let it completely envelope his feeling of belonging. He wished -and for a split second wondered if- that this would be a gateway to a different, more wonderful place. Walking forward, the light was getting brighter, offering what no sensible mind would decline.

Everything vanished and there was only the gleaming nexus. Humility found him, as if special recognition were offered, and thought himself unworthy of the notice. His skin started to tingle as he drew upon his destination; it seemed as if the light was percolating through every pore. He put his arm up to shield his eyes from the assaulting, yet welcoming, paradise.

And walked through.

The cool breeze stung him and shook him from his whimsy, like a sudden blast from a cold shower that kills sleep. The city spanned out, its street lights starting to flicker on in the dimming dusk- a mockery of security. An awful maze loomed forth, writhing with sudden sickly convulsions, compounding its own malevolence into the folds, at any minute to burst forth with a rupture of violence and depravity. Shadows slowly crept from their hiding places to veil all the evil pleasures the reprobates reveled in. He knew this is what he would witness, but he dared to let himself hope. Seeing it, it was as though someone had punched through the inside of his stomach and squeezed.

Looking up towards the sky he wanted to be away. Somewhere, anywhere- to float along in the lonely depths of space, but yet he knew he would not feel alone. Afterall, it offered much more in terms of interest and wonder than any person he would ever meet here. Stars twinkled which seemed to signal a passage home, though he was without a means to take use of their guide. The city, in bitter jest, returned its own answer and hurled its indignation without repose. Sultry signs, some which lit up, had a women that, in a series of alternating bulbs, took off her top, yet her free arm now hid the area while the bra was raised in her other hand, displayed like a trophy.

a?I actually live out there.a? He whispered in disgust.

Just then there came a sound from which he dreaded, but knew was coming. It was the hound that had never lost the scent. A matter that must be addressed, tonight. As the hurried thud of steps became louder he felt a pang of guilt for bringing his troubles into such a holy place, but it couldn't have been helped. Sweat started to perspire under his arms, leaving an exceptionally cool feeling underneath his sleeves. He had been through many confrontations and this was more of an involuntary bodily reaction now to warn him. But his fear had been harnessed long ago. He took in a deep breath, and slowly exhaled, calmly. Over and over he did this until the sound came to its climax.

The steps stopped suddenly, and he felt the eyes starring at him. Then the walking started up again with vigorous determination, heading in his direction. The adversary came to a halt maybe but a few yards away, and waited.

He felt bare now. His sanctuary had been intruded apoun, and he was forced to tear himself away from his thoughts. He tried to regain a small piece of what was lost before his company came, but stomach and back were all a flutter, signaling that there was a presence nearby.
It isn't done, by the way.

When I was 16 I began dating a guy who treated me terrible. For 3 years he emotionally & physically abused me. Forcing me to have sex, comparing my sexual acts to other women he'd been with using names like c*nt and b**** constantly. He had me using drugs etc.

It took me awhile to move on but I did. I dated someone on and off for a yr. Flew all the way from S.C. to P.A. to go see him only to have him admit to me he'd been cheating on me the entire time and wanted nothing to do with me.

After that I tried once again to move on. Dated someone for a very short period of time and stupidly slept with him.. As soon as we finished having sex he turned over in bed and said "Ok I think we should break up" My heart sank it was a total slap in the face.

Now, I can't date anyone. I can get close to guys and tell them things but dating I can't do it. I find one flaw in every single guy and force myself to focus on that so I don't become interested in them. I've been asked out on dates but, I turn everyone down. I give off the impression as someone who's "really wants" a relationship but....even though this is true I can't get close to ANYONE

is this normal?
I'm attracted to a few ppl and talk to my friends about men I find attractive but I can't go further then he's cute I'd like to get to know him stage. A lot of times I don't even bother talking to the person.

I live in a good area see alot of people driving nice cars ,having beautiful women some are pretty old.I see alot of wealth where I live but I dont see any minorites around here.

I see that alot of these people have jobs that dont require much education and they live good most of ther jobs require licences or very little technical training.I have found that most African Americans can not go to school on the Pell Grant after the have become rehabiliated and released from prison and that a white baby rapist can get a degree but the cant because the pell grant prohibits them from going to school.
There is not jobs for men that pay money what Mickey D ,Scooping ince cream even Daily labor and Wal_Mart are closing door to felons are we not creating a society of political prisoners forced to sale drugs to have something grown men cant work for no 7 or 8 dollars an hour .I know people that have been working for years at a place and dont make more than 8 bucks and hour something has to give here .I dont feel people should get a handout for every problems but hell education is the key for these people if we dont help them get a skill want do folks expect them to do .No one seems to want these people or help them no wonder there in prison .

Theres not nothing out here for them .

I am no Miss America, but I genuinely believe in the concept of world peace. I believe that in making a conscious decision to devote your life to making the world a degree better than it was upon your arrival, you achieve happiness and success. To emulate this belief, I spent my seventeenth birthday in Chicago with a group of peers serving meals at the local homeless shelter. To a Crossville native, a place where homelessness is not a common issue, a big city full of outstretched hands begging you to summon your kindness, and buy their next meal is a shock. But why are these people reduced to this? Are they just looking for a free ride through life? Or are they legitimately in need of our assitance? During some of my time spent in the Windy City, I attended a seminar of sorts, that discussed the process of gentrification in big cities. Granted, not all homeless beings are a result of this, but it does have an astounding effect on the homeless population. So my mission in the next few paragraphs is to define gentrification in order for people to understand one of the major reasons that families are put out on the streets.

Mr. Webster defines gentrification as "the buying and renovation of houses and stores in deteriorated urban neighborhoods by upper- or middle-income families or individuals, thus improving property values but often displacing low-income families and small businesses." Although that is true, it is the objective definition, and creates no deeper understanding at all. It almost sounds appealing. "Wow, I can buy property for cheap, renovate it, and turn it for a profit, but people I don't even know will possibly not be able to afford their place anymore. It's okay, I'll just donate some extra money to a homeless man, and my conscious will be clear." That's hardly the case. You actually contribute to the homeless population! Close your eyes, and imagine this.

You see them everywhere you turn. People in ragged, dirty clothes, with matted hair and decaying teeth. Some of them are crazy, rocking back and fourth, chanting some sort of language that only they understand. Some are intoxicated. You can smell the odor of cheap whiskey as you approach. You reach your destination which is a resturant with rave reviews. You've been planning to go there for weeks. You hold the door open for your friends and glance to your right and suddenly feel like someone has punched you in the stomach. A woman with her children are huddled together under a box, playing jacks. You feel guilty for your privledge to be eating at this resturant that charges seven dollars for a slice of pizza, while you wonder when the last time this family has ate a meal. You could give them money for food, with the fear that they would not use it for it's intended purpose; or you could invite them to come eat with your friends, with the fear that the other customers would complain and your party would get asked to leave. You decide to invite them in, not caring what people think. They share stories of how they became homeless. The explaination is a classic example of gentrification.

She tells you how her husband worked as a garbage man and they lived in a run-down apartment. She noticed all at once construction to the apartment building across the street. By the end of the month her rent had increased dramaticly, forcing them on to the streets. Her husband was working, but with his low income they could no longer afford to live in the apartment they had been living in for years. This happened to a lot of people in her apartment building. She points out Martha and Dean on the end of the street begging. Now her apartment building along with several others in her former neighborhood hve been renovated and rebuilt. In place of her family and friends are higher income families, who are willing to pay the high price of the apartment rent.

"Rapid Ubanization" an article by Jessica _________ states that "3.3 billion- half of Earth's population- live in cities, and it is estimated that it will be 5 billion in 20 years." People move to cities for different reasons, the most common one being the opportunity for higher-paying jobs. Those people need places to live. So the city meets, and decides which neighborhoods to urbanize, and move in the fresh young talent that have the money to pay increased rent rates. Now is anyone up for some crafty money making?

My father is a blue-collar working man. He works three jobs, not because he likes the stress that entails it, but because it makes him happy to be able to adequately provide for his family. There are many people in the world like him. When the subject of homeless people come up, he gets infuriated. He starts ranting about people being able to work as well as he can, and they just want to bum. From experience, there are plenty of people to fit this mold. They do not want to work so they swarm the streets looking for handouts. This

This is what America needs !
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd - Australia

Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on Wednesday to get out of Australia , as the government targeted radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks..

Separately, Howard angered some Australian Muslims on Wednesday by saying he supported spy agencies monitoring the nation's mosques..

Quote:

"IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT. Take It Or Leave It. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Bali , we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Australians."

"This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom. We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society, Learn the Language!"

"Most Australians believe in God. This is not some Christian, right wing, political push, but a fact, because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture."

"We will accept your beliefs, and will not question why. All we ask is that you accept ours, and live in harmony and peaceful enjoyment with us."

"This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great Australian freedom, THE RIGHT TO LEAVE."

"If you aren't happy here then LEAVE. We didn't force you to come here. You asked to be here. So accept the country YOU accepted."

Maybe if we circulate this , American citizens will find the backbone to start speaking and voicing the same truths.

I had to review a movie or play, and I chose the Sound Of Music. Do you think this is good? Thanks!

The musical, The Sound of Music, directed by Robert Wise, is a movie that regards Maria, a prospective nun, who is assigned to work with the von Trapp family during World War II. Throughout the movie, Maria begins to fall in love with Captain von Trapp, and throughout the movie, their relationship progresses. The film brings upon a musical and joyful atmosphere throughout, and attracts viewers of all ages.
Maria, who is a prospective nun, is training at the abbey near Salzburg, Austria. She is a very free-spirited woman, who enjoys everything music and singing has to offer. She is a young, blonde woman, with short hair, a slender build, and equipped with a beautiful voice created for singing many songs. As she gains a relationship with the von Trapp children, her kindness expands, because she feels the maternal side of her come out of its shell, and expresses itself fully.
The Sound of Music takes place in Salzburg, Austria during World War II. The season is during spring, with good weather throughout the movie. The scenes take place in a rural town in which the children visit with Maria, and the rurally located von Trapp mansion. There are many green hills surrounding the area, and a vast lake in front of the von Trapp mansion, adding to the peacefulness of the town, despite World War II going on around them.
There are many conflicts that take place in The Sound of Music, such as Maria and Captain von Trapp disagreeing on the way that the children are treated. The Captain treats the kids as if they were attending military school, and has high expectations from them. They are required to dress in full uniform and are under the command of a whistle. Maria highly disapproves of his actions, believing children should be allowed to be children. This conflict is a man vs. man conflict, because Maria is disagreeing with the Captain. Another conflict that takes place in the movie is that the Nazis are demanding Captain von Trapp serve in their army and lead the Nazi forces. The Captain does not go at all costs, and makes sure of it. So, during his and his new familyas scheduled performance at the Salzburg Music Festival, the von Trapp family escapes to Switzerland, which is a neutral country, in order to live in peace. This conflict is a man vs. man conflict, since Captain von Trapp is against the Nazi army views and wishes.
The theme of this movie is to be true to yourself, because not doing so can lead to consequences. In the movie, for example, Maria plans on becoming a nun, but can't because she isn't being true to herself. The theme of being true to yourself is stressed throughout the movie. In addition, when Captain von Trapp is being drafted to go lead the Nazis, the von Trapp family leave Austria and go to Switzerland , because they can't be true to themselves and join the Nazis. Since the Nazis tried to spread their hatred for people that were different from them, the von Trapp family simply could not support this and couldn't be true to themselves by helping the Nazis.
I'm a freshman in high school, give me a break. For ninth grade, I'm a pretty good writer.

When you have verses like these for apostates and non believers (atheists)
a?One day a man who had an Israelite mother and an Egyptian father got into a fight with one of the Israelite men. During the fight, this son of an Israelite woman blasphemed the LORDas name. So the man was brought to Moses for judgment. His motheras name was Shelomith. She was the daughter of Dibri of the tribe of Dan. They put the man in custody until the LORDas will in the matter should become clear. Then the LORD said to Moses, a?Take the blasphemer outside the camp, and tell all those who heard him to lay their hands on his head. Then let the entire community stone him to death. Say to the people of Israel: Those who blaspheme God will suffer the consequences of their guilt and be punished. Anyone who blasphemes the LORDas name must be stoned to death by the whole community of Israel. Any Israelite or foreigner among you who blasphemes the LORDas name will surely die. a? (Leviticus 24:10-16)

a?Suppose someone secretly entices youaeven your brother, your son or daughter, your beloved wife, or your closest friendaand says, a?Let us go worship other godsaagods that neither you nor your ancestors have known. They might suggest that you worship the gods of peoples who live nearby or who come from the ends of the earth. But do not give in or listen. Have no pity, and do not spare or protect them. You must put them to death! Strike the first blow yourself, and then all the people must join in. Stone the guilty ones to death because they have tried to draw you away from the Lord your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of slavery.a? (Deuteronomy 13:6-10)

a?When you begin living in the towns the Lord your God is giving you, you may hear that scoundrels among you are leading their fellow citizens astray by saying, a?Let us go worship other godsaagods you have not known before. In such cases, you must examine the facts carefully. If you find that the report is true and such a detestable act has been committed among you, you must attack that town and completely destroy[b] all its inhabitants, as well as all the livestock. Then you must pile all the plunder in the middle of the open square and burn it. Burn the entire town as a burnt offering to the Lord your God. That town must remain a ruin forever; it may never be rebuilt. (Deuteronomy 13: 12-16)

a?When you begin living in the towns the Lord your God is giving you, a man or woman among you might do evil in the sight of the Lord your God and violate the covenant. For instance, they might serve other gods or worship the sun, the moon, or any of the starsathe forces of heavenawhich I have strictly forbidden. When you hear about it, investigate the matter thoroughly. If it is true that this detestable thing has been done in Israel, then the man or woman who has committed such an evil act must be taken to the gates of the town and stoned to death.a? (Deuteronomy 17:2-5)

a?Then they entered into a covenant to seek the Lord, the God of their ancestors, with all their heart and soul. They agreed that anyone who refused to seek the Lord, the God of Israel, would be put to deathawhether young or old, man or womana?(2nd Chronicles 12-13)

General Killing in Practice

a?Then I heard the LORD say to the other men, a?Follow him through the city and kill everyone whose forehead is not marked. Show no mercy; have no pity! Kill them all a old and young, girls and women and little children. But do not touch anyone with the mark. Begin your task right here at the Temple.a? So they began by killing the seventy leaders. a?Defile the Temple!a? the LORD commanded. a?Fill its courtyards with the bodies of those you kill! Go!a? So they went throughout the city and did as they were told.a?(Ezekiel 9:5-7)

a?You are my battle-ax and sword,a? says the LORD. a?With you I will shatter nations and destroy many kingdoms. With you I will shatter armies, destroying the horse and rider, the chariot and charioteer. With you I will shatter men and women, old people and children, young men and maidens. With you I will shatter shepherds and flocks, farmers and oxen, captains and rulers. a?As you watch, I will repay Babylon and the people of Babylonia for all the wrong they have done to my people in Jerusalem,a? says the LORD. a?Look, O mighty mountain, destroyer of the earth! I am your enemy,a? says the LORD. a?I will raise my fist against you, to roll you down from the heights. When I am finished, you will be nothing but a heap of rubble. You will be desolate forever. Even your stones will never again be used for building. You will be completely wiped out,a? says the LORD. (Jeremiah 51:20-26)

a?Anyone who is captured will be run through with a sword. Their little children will be dashed to death right before their eyes. Their homes will be sacked and their wives raped by the attacking hordes. For I will stir up the Medes against Babylon,
Even one verse would make a person sick.
How sick is christianity

With all the infidelity going on today and all the women in the work force who cheats more men or women. What you think? O and another thing, is someone faithful just because they have not had the opportunity to cheat. I think faithfulness becomes real only when truly tested.

Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on Wednesday to get out of Australia , as the government targeted radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks..

Separately, Rudd angered some Australian Muslims on Wednesday by saying he supported spy agencies monitoring the nation's mosques. Quote:
'IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT. Take It Or Leave It. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Bali , we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Australians. '

'This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom'

'We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society . Learn the language!'

'Most Australians believe in God. This is not some Christian, right wing, political push, but a fact, because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture.'

'We will accept your beliefs, and will not question why. All we ask is that you accept ours, and live in harmony and peaceful enjoyment with us.'

'This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great Australian freedom, 'THE RIGHT TO LEAVE'.'

'If you aren't happy here then LEAVE. We didn't force you to come here. You asked to be here. So accept the country YOU accepted.'

This was given to me by Ledgend Lady but what are your beliefs on it?

Every few weeks I go by a getto and find that there are less and less kids every time I go .You hardly ever see young men in there late teens or 20s .Its like they have been kidnapped.I know there all in jail ,there not much beauty in hte getto i.e gutter.I have much sympathy for them because I dont see hardly anyone white .Its all poor blacks and hispanics know the world doesnt owe the poor nothing but what does society expect these misearblly poor people to do work for 7 to 8 bucks and hour for many years and hope that they become a store manager one day .Its truly sad to find that in almost any city or town you go you can find crack .I have seen mothers have crack babies ,they simply couldnt stop smoking its like it has possessed there body .

Could crack be giving the poor and downtrodden feeling of Europhia that make them feel better about tehmselves .Can the effects of oppression strip a women or man of all the dignity and self worth and force them to sink to a state of so much dispair they care not about a jail or prison ?Seems so I have seen in cities across America people lighting up in front of cops there simplyy just to many people to arrest it would take bus load after bus load ,and after we lock up these unfortunates whats next we want tehm to be on probation and parole enter programs but there isnt no way they can be self sufficent working job that provide no money for self sufficency .Seems to me that crack has become the god of the poor and oppressed in the getto ,it is used to make money and for some to smoke to temporarily mask there feeling of nothingness..

America has undermined the freedoms of people by forcing them to be apart of a society which they dont belong to and arresting people for consensual crimes .and not looking at the reasons for drug abuse because it is a both a mental problem and a addiction that jail can not fix it can only temporaily hide the problem from the addict.

As long as the FDA does not regulate the product money gets siphoned to in the black market to buy more crack and create more problems with technology with have the ability to lessen the effects of drugs such as Marajuna which can be used to create drugs that have both the appearance of crack but with a lot less negative effects and health problems compared to alcohol and tobacoo.

Is it possible for women to be thought of as equals as men in society and polarity to remain between the personalities? It seems that the feminist movement and society after the fact have forced men to become more sensitive, 'nice', ect... and women more hardened and insensitive. Also I've noticed that while women are always screaming that they want a 'nice' guy, they always go for the a-hole manly man and tell everyone they don't know why they always end up with the a-holes. Has the feminist movement kind of gone overboard to the point where polarity no longer remains and maybe this is why the divorce rate has skyrocketed and people generally report more unhappiness with life and relationships?
Tracy - if there was no polarity you would never be interested in the opposite sex. You are thinking way too black and white and inside 'the box'. We are not talking north and south pole we are talking male/female polarity and it does exist. OPPOSITES ATTRACT.

We are both in our 40's but young at heart.
We met at adult school 1 year ago. We became friends in December. We stopped talking for 1 month when I developed a crush on her. I wrote her a bunch of zanney and crazy emails during that time that she loved but she never wrote me back.

We bumped into each other a month later and became really good friends. We spent much time together and on the phone for hours a day. She would call me to wish me sweet pleasant dreams. Everything seems really sweet but we were never overtly romantic but her late night calls were real sweet. I sent her flowers a few times and once just recently but I never forced myself on her.

She had told me long before she never wanted another relationship because she was divorced twice and had some light sexual child abuse issues.

I helped her a lot with her certifications and she helped me see things more creatively.
I was going through a divorce which made her feel uncomfortable. She didnat want to have an effect on the divorce either positively or negatively.

In late June we have a 5 hour talk where were dance around our emotional issues. Basically I said I was falling in love with her but I didnat want to say too much because I didnat want to get hurt. She said I was amazing but I was a married man and she would not talk to me about her feelings because I was a married man but she admitted if things continue along its current path maybe positive things could work out between us but she didnat want me to depend on that. She has lots of internal issues and just wasnat sure. The conversation was very sweet and romantic. You could tell by her eye contact.

She took her exam in mid June and re-tested in late July. Things looked like they were going good but she never said much to me about her feelings. I used to send her crazy emails about my feelings and fun personally stuff she loved but over time she drift a part from me. I tried to keep her close but at one point you have to back off when its not recipicated. She never avoided me and would almost always return my calls very promptly.

At first I was hoping that maybe it was unintenially but when I questioned her about it she acted like things were normal. I donat know what happened. I donat think she is seeing anyone but at this point I donat know. We have gone from seeing each other 3-4 times a week to maybe once every 2 weeks and now I wonder if it will be longer than that. We talk but its mostly about business or our careers and not so much about other personal stuff. Near the end of the summer she thanked me for a most wonder summer that I contributed greatly to.

So here I am. Maybe she had decided to detach from me and wait for my divorce before we get friendly again or maybe this the end and she decided we not were right for one another and felt guilty about my divorce.

I donat know but it makes me sad that I can be such as good friend with someone for so long and then it to become like an acquaintance for no apparently reason. One thing I do know and that she knew I would get very upset if she told me she wanted to cut it off so many she decided to do it without telling me. I am at a loss. I am trying to not so quickly return her calls but I am still very nice to her. Its ovibious by her lack of calls and type of conversations that she wants to not be my good friend anymore. Maybe she never was ?

at least try to help with a little bit...mostly i need help rewording, and using better words.
There are several events in Jane Eyre that Marjory affect the events and the outcome of the novel. The thing that affects it the most is social status. In the nineteenth century, social status was a big deal and money meant a lot. Also, men were seen as superior to women. Jane Eyre and her relationship with Mr. Rochester significantly change as the novel progresses. This happens because Jane is changing into a different person; her social status gradually changes and a level of equality is established between Jane and Mr. Rochester. Social status has an immense influence in Jane Eyre, and it affects how she develops into the woman she has become.
When Jane is a child, she has a low social status. When her parents die, she is raised by her Aunt Reed, who has a lot of money. Ms. Reed, however, does not care about Jane or consider her to be a part of the family. When Jane turns ten years old, she is sent to a charity school, called Lowood. Here, all the girls wear plain clothes and are forbidden to wear curls in their hair. They donat wear anything that makes them look like they are from the upper class. Jane is forced to be plain and ordinary, like every other girl at Lowood. After a few years, Jane becomes a teacher at Lowood, and gets paid for the first time. Throughout her years spent at Lowood, Jane becomes more independent and she begins to recognize who she is. She wants to teach somewhere new, she wants to go somewhere new with new people. She puts an ad in the Herald, seeking a job as a governess. She soon gets a reply from Mrs. Fairfax. Jane is to be paid thirty pounds per annum, which is twice as much money as she is getting at her current job. This bumps up her social status a little bit, but not significantly.
She meets Mr. Rochester and falls for him. She scolds herself for falling in love with him because she knows that he is superior to her. He has more money, so Jane believes that he can get any woman he wants. She knows that Rochester would benefit by marrying Blanch Ingram, which he almost does. Head have more connections and more money. How could he ever want someone so plain and poor like herself? When Rochester finally tells Jane that he has feelings for her, Jane is struck with disbelief. She thinks he is joking, but when she realizes that his feelings towards her are true, she feels happier than ever. Rochester offers her gifts and an elaborate wedding and she refuses. She feels uneasy and she feels like sheas not bringing anything into the marriage. This is when she decides to leave Rochester. While Jane is living with St. John Rivers she finds out that her uncle, John Eyre, has died and he left her a fortune of twenty thousand pounds. Although she gave up the majority of her inheritance, she still had a lot to offer now; she wouldnat feel like Rochesteras inferior. When she went back to Rochester, she found out that he had been in a fire. He is now blind and crippled, which significantly lowers his social status. Since Jane and Rochester are now in the same social class, they can be in a happy and functional relationship.
oops...thanks guys

So tell me what you think. Her name is Chase Coleman. But DEvin calls her Liz cause her middle name is Elizabeth. And yes...he did die.

I walked into the room. Benton was waiting, arms across his chest, looking through the one way window. His face was fixed in a scowl.
a?Did he confess?a?
a?He wonat say a thing.a?
I threw my jacket on a folding chair. a?Great,a?
a?Well, what does that mean?a? Luke asked behind me.
a?It means I have to question the psychopath.a?
Outside the door, I placed my thumb to the reader.
a?Chase Coleman, access granted.a? Said a mechanical voice.
The heavy metal door swung open. Behind it was a dark room, with just a single table and two chairs. Behind the table sat my worst nightmare, leaning back leisurely.
a?Ah, my dear Chase,a? He laughed, becoming alert.
I repressed a shudder and sat down across from him. a?You havenat changed a bit.a?
a?On the contrary, my hair has gotten a tad bit grayer.a? Pierce tried to reach for his head but was stopped by the clang of handcuffs. a?Are these necessary?a?
a?Since I donat want you touching me, uh, yes.a?
The look he gave me was somewhere between pity and sorrow. a?Dearest, why would you refuse me?a?
I swallowed. a?Did you kill those people?a?
a?I donat want to talk about them,a? He leaned forward. a?I want to talk about us.a?
a?There never was an us, Henry Pierce. Youare old enough to be my father.a?
a?You like older men though, donat you? You fell for him. And quickly too,a? His voice still had the same sliminess that it had had three years ago.
a?Donat,a? I flexed my hand on the table.
a?Yes, I agree. The past is the past.a? Pierce watched my hand closely, and then looked back at me. a?You have blossomed into a woman Chase. A beautiful one I might add.a?
I opened the file on the table. Pictures of horrible crimes stared back at me. I placed each one in front of Pierce, showing the boy last. When I spoke my voice was full of slow pain. a?Did you kill them?a?
He studied each one, floating them in front of him so he could see better. After he was done, his dark eyes searched my face. a?I imagine you are very good at your job?a?
a?What does that have to do with anything?a? I snatched the pictures from the air and placed them back in the file.
a?Because darling,a? Pierce said in his sharp British accent. a?You were my best pupil. I have to know if I taught you well.a?
a?You taught me nothing,a? I slammed my fist on the table.
He shook his head, a slow smile spreading across his face. a?Thatas where youare wrong, love. I taught you everything you know. I made you who you are.a?
My stomach heaved at the thought of that. a?I learned not to love the Pierce men a long time ago. First with you and your lies and then with--,a? I stopped, my breath catching my throat.
a?Canat even say his name?a? Pierce looked amused. a?I thought you were stronger than that.a?
I fought back the tears and spoke. a?I am.a?
a?Have you been practicing? Iad like to see what you can do.a?
a?No,a? I spat. a?The only reason Iam here is because thatas what Iave been ordered to do. Donat think this is a social occasion.a?
a?Iave been in hiding for the last three years, Chase.a? He leaned forward as if to share a secret. a?This is the closest to a social occasion that Iave ever had. And besides,a? He leaned back and laughed. a?Devin would want me to have you.a?
Before I knew what I was doing, he was in the air, his face purple. I concentrated one part of my mind on the door, keeping it closed. With my hand outstretched, I squeezed, sending a spasm of pain through Pierce.
He chuckled in response. a?I taught you that trick sweet.a?
Another squeeze and his body shuddered, every limb shuddering.
a?I remember that,a? He was laughing, laughing, at me! a?When you use It, the lightning bolt in your eyes. Glorious.a?
It took every ounce of my strength to not kill him.
a?Is this what he loved about you? I never understood it fully. But maybeaa? He made a choking noise. a?Maybe he liked your power.a?
I closed my eyes and breathed deeply. Devinas face floated before me, tan and beautiful and glorious. After a while I realized I could taste the blood from where I had bitten down on my lip.
Enough Chase, His voice said. You arenat this person.
With another anguished sigh, I lowered Pierce, not opening my eyes until he was collapsed on the floor, gasping for breath. His dark red hair was sticking to the back of his neck with sweat, the veins in his neck sticking out prominently.
a?Enjoy your time in Labyrinth,a? I spat.
I turned around and went to leave, but was slung back with such force that the wind was knocked out of me. Peirce had broken free from his restraints and was holding me up, just inches away from him.
a?Still not powerful enough to beat me?a? His breath tickled my cheek as he sniffed my hair. a?Maybe I didnat teach you everything. My pupil would have won. At all costs.a?
My body had sparks flying from it, whirling the room into a mystic l

It seems women are being exposed to rhetoric to encourage more traditionally male traits in them. Is this artificial social conditioning or generally equality where women naturally so want to act more like males.

It seems women are becoming more masculine. Is this normal and women only acted feminine because they were forced to in the old days? Or do you beleive there are new social ideals of what it is to be a "strong, independent woman"? And they are starting to socialize girls into masculinity?

Does the Bible Promote Slavery?

i found these quotes from the bible and im worried if God supports slavery or not:
Exodus Chapter 21, verse 1:
Now these are the ordinances which you shall set before them. When you buy a Hebrew slave, he shall serve six years, and in the seventh he shall go out free, for nothing. If he comes in single, he shall go out single; if he comes in married, then his wife shall go out with him. If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the wife and her children shall be her master's and he shall go out alone. But if the slave plainly says, 'I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free,' then his master shall bring him to God, and he shall bring him to the door or the doorpost; and his master shall bore his ear through with an awl; and he shall serve him for life.

Leviticus Chapter 25, verse 44:
Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. You can will them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.

20:10-17When you march up to attack a city, make its people an offer of peace. If they accept and open their gates, all the people in it shall be subject to forced labor and shall work for you. If they refuse to make peace and they engage you in battle, lay siege to that city. When the Lord your God delivers it into your hand, put to the sword all the men in it. As for the women, the children, the livestock and everything else in the city, you may take these as plunder for yourselves. . . . This is how you are to treat all the cities that are at a distance from you and do not belong to the nations nearby.
However, in the cities of the nations the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, do not leave alive anything that breathes. Completely destroy themathe Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusitesaas the Lord your God has commanded you.

Exodus 21:20-21If a man beats his male or female slave with a rod and the slave dies as a direct result, he must be punished, but he is not to be punished if the slave gets up after a day or two, since the slave is his property.

Deuteronomy 21:18-21
"Ye shall utterly destroy all the places, wherein the nations which ye shall possess served their gods, upon the high mountains, and upon the hills, and under every green tree:
And ye shall overthrow their altars, and break their pillars, and burn their groves with fire; and ye shall hew down the graven images of their gods, and destroy the names of them out of that place."

We constantly hear of crackdowns on a?dead-beat dads,a? but the topic of how they often originate remains hidden and deserves serious light: Dead-beat Mothers.

Motherhood has always been played off as a moral symbol beyond reproach. The truth is it has little moral worth; anyone on I-75 at rush-hour knows there is little risk of the race dying out. Babies are not the final frontier, though that lie certainly helps serve lazy parasites. When choosing to waste her life, her goal is twofold: to have her sustenance assuredato force a man into a position where he must support heraand second, to neatly dispose of her productive years.

There are certain levels of living that no one has the right to affect, including your spouse. First is your purpose in life. Second is the choice of rewards for your own effort, of which she too, is an extension. Trapping a significant other is among the worst malice; arguably worse then rape. Because itas effects are so long term as it permanently affects so many. Pregnancy in this case is a grasping attempt to take your living energy and spend it on her own bumbling course of destruction: if she is willing to derail your life, she doesnat care what happens to you and itas just the beginningathe tip of the iceberg.

To accomplish her fraud, a woman is given a clear outline: created by legislators; funded by tax dollars; and backed up by the governmentas monopoly on legal violence. If at any point a man refuses to cooperate men with guns will come to his home and drag him away. A man must finance the endeavor, regardless of how a woman becomes pregnant. When deception has no legal relevance, a serious opportunity exists for fraud to thrive. Here are a few real cases in which this type of insanity manifests itas self: a middle age teacher statutorily rapes one of her 13 year old students, becomes pregnant, refuses to have an abortion, has a baby, sues him for support and wins. In another, a nurse has sex with a hospital patient, keeps the used condom, inseminates herself in the bathroom, has a baby, sues him for support and wins. Theoretically, a woman could break into a sperm bank, inseminate herself from a dead millionaire, then sue his estate for support and our courts would oblige. There are countless cases of equally asinine yet more conventional deception, which is all predation, period. Such women believe the state of motherhood is beyond moral question, and backed by our courts, is free to commit any atrocity to achieve it. What are our legal guardians thinking? I wouldnat trust such a Judge to preside over a toaster: fraud is a felony. The legal and moral response to steal money through fraud in any other realm is prison time and restitution, but in this case, the penalties are reserved for the victim.

Couples must plan for the fact that no birth control method is 100% effective, and the choice to have children or not to and when, is not outside the courtas authority to acknowledge. A violation of trust is the basis for any legal suit, and itas the courtas obligation to determine innocence and reward it as to determine guilt and punish it, or in this case, to grant it nothing.
Still, we hear a?If you didnat want children, you shouldnat have had sex.a? If couples have sex twice a week over the course of a twenty year relationship resulting in two children, sex was had .001% of the time for procreation. The other 99.999% of the time, it was for the sake of the sex. Do we see bikini-clad models and think lustfully of diapers? Does a woman see a gorgeous guy and think of a minivan and a huge rear? SEX IS AN END IN ITSELF. If not, then it is a form of prostitution. Unplanned pregnancy is no longer an irreversible malady hopeless to challenge, and if one partner changes the rules, both lives need not be taken off track. Every new choice our medical advancements offer poses an obligation by those involved to stand by their word, and itas about time the courts recognized it.

There are enough people on the planet; surely there is room for justice. If men could opt out from the beginning, her pattern would be broken. If she violates her vows as wife or partner, she can face the consequences alone. Like welfare reform, shead become self-responsible and weigh her choices more carefully. If she refuses abortion on supposedly moral grounds, sheall have to come to grips with what her principles cost.

Parenting is too important to be handled haphazardly. A both parents should have to right to wait for the conditions he finds conducive to his being a good mate and fatheraconditions of his fulfillment, safety and honor. It is each personas responsibility to find a mutually agreeable partner, together to develop a stable environment, and have children when both so intend. Children must be a product of love, trust, mutual respect and sound life progressionanot of fraud, contempt and aimlessness.

The world is full of Spirit Murderers who will try to take control of your resourc

Does a woman see a gorgeous guy and think of a minivan and a fat ass?

I think it has the word Brother/s in the title. It's about this African American teen that lives in a city and one day he some how ends up in the past during the slavery times. He's forced to become a slave. I think he sort of befriends his masters wife or some Caucasian woman and she gives him a book to read. He meets 2 people who look like two of his friends from the future. He has a conflict with this other dude that's also black, but the guy isn't a slave. He actually beats the other slaves. The teen gets beaten by him once. That's all I remember...

But I do remember one scene that I think is from this movie but I'm not sure. When the teen ends up in the past, he is in some field with a lot of trees and there are these men on horses in the area.

On this lameass website called askmen.com, 500,000 men were asked the question, "How many dates should the man pay for?" 40% responded "majority until relationship is established" (whatever that means) and 30 % responded "majority throughout the entire relationship."

Why do men still act chivalrous toward women by paying for dates and opening doors and so forth when women have more advantages and opportunities these days and in some cities actually make more than men? I guess essentially my question is why and how are so many men so duped? Is there some kind of collective delusionary psychosis happening among men these days, because how does that make sense? I honestly supplicate your sense of reason here: if you "believe" you should pay for someone and serve her in various ways even if you make less than her and she is more opportunity than you, is that not entering into some kind of state of virtual servitude? You know, slaves took their masters coats, pulled out their chairs, opened their doors for them, dirtied their clothes to keep their master's clean, stand up when their masters entered the room etc.

Take marriage too, the same ask"men" survey claims 75 % of the 500,000 polled said that marriage is "a necessary institution and they help preserve", never mind how completely under duress they are in a failed marriage. Is it reasonable that you believe an instituion that steals away you assets, children, and general well being--that's so unfair that they automatically deem the mother the best parent no matter how bad she is, that forces you to pay alimony and give away your house even if the woman instigates the divorce and makes as much money as the the man?

There's been other cases throughout history (and there are other examples of this in society right now) where a large group of people are so deluded and have been made to believe something for so long that they become completely disconnected from reality and actually feverishly support the structures and systems that virtually enslave them. I think this phenomenon is seriously happening to men collectively these days, imo (just like it was happening to women so many years ago)

But the reason why I brought this up is because I'd like to hear your opinion. Anyone have any thoughts?

a?It all began many years ago. The forceful alien race known as the Sirra swept across the planet, destroying all that were in their path. Men, women, children, they all were killed. Some were killed forcefully, others by sheer surprise. My family, my family was taken and theyave never returned. You see, I joined the military branch known as Group 090 shortly after my familyas disappearance. Group 090as only purpose was to find the Planet X, a planet so similar to Earth in that it can protect us humans from the alien race. Why I joined this group I do not know. Maybe itas to take my mind off my families disappearance. Maybe itas to seek revenge. I donat know, nor do I care. The only problem with this group however, is that we have yet to find Planet X. No one has. We received a distress call from a group of soldiers near what we believe to be Planet X but are currently unsure. The distressed group, 049, is under heavy distress, and our mission has changed slightly to a search, rescue, and find mission. We will continue to search for Planet X after our rescue mission. Our search is becoming desperate in that this planet is said to have many powers, one of which could help us not only wipe out the alien race and other destructive forces like it, but also send peace across the entire universe so that world will be just as it is suppose to be. As for Earth, Earth is still on grasp of survival. A team of aliens found Earth what seems like yesterday, but was truly years ago. They destroyed all that they could before being destroyed, not by usabut by something different, something unknown. We must finish our search and finish this war before it becomes just that. Our mission has not changed. My mission, my mission remains the same. As it always will. Though I want it to be the end, this I fear is only the beginning.a?

America, Canada, all Europe ..... needs a President like this.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd - Australia
Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on Wednesday to get out of Australia, as the government targeted radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks.

Separately, Howard angered some Australian Muslims on Wednesday by saying he supported spy agencies monitoring the nation's mosques.

Quote: 'IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT. Take It Or Leave It. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Bali, we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Australians.'

'This culture has been
developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom. We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society, Learn the Language!'

'Most Australians believe in God. This is not some Christian, right wing, political push, but a fact, because Christian men and=2
0women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented.

'This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow
you every opportunity to enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great Australian freedom, THE RIGHT TO LEAVE.'

'If you aren't happy here then LEAVE. We didn't force you to come here. You asked to be here. So accept the country YOU accepted.'
Maybe if we circulate this , American citizens will find the backbone to start speaking and voicing the same truths.

If you agree, please SEND THIS ON.

Dating life in america?
The average man can't just go out and "get" a girl he likes anytime for a romantic date, sex, or even simple companionship. Instead, he has to wait years for a girl to magically fall in love with him and give him everything he wants. It's like depending on the unpredictable forces of destiny, in other words. Until then, he has to work be positive, seek extracurricular activities and pretend that he's happy without sex, in order to "fit in" and not look like a "creep". And even if he finds a real partner, if it doesn't work out for some reason, he has to repeat the process and wait years again. This is the "normal" process for an average guy in America, and if he complains about it, then he's seen as a "negative whiney loser", so he must pretend like everything is fine and that there's nothing wrong. So, what many guys do is when they finally do get a girl after years of loneliness and sexlessness, they desperately hold onto her for life, knowing that she's the only thing keeping them from returning to the dreaded singles scene for men in America. Thus they become pussywhipped, doing everything she says and making her the boss. That's the norm in America.

it's politically incorrect and taboo in the US to complain about women, the media only gives attention to the complaints of women not men.

I really feel like my boyfriend hates me, he dislikes everything I do he always puts me down he only cheats on me the arouse himself with the fact of it. he becomes friends with everyone i have problems with and says that I am hate-full, he calls me names. but still he does not want me to leave he does not want to leave me, even though I have nothing to offer him and find every way to hinder me from a new life. I found out that this sort of situation is not uncommon. and a lot of husbands hate their wife's, they "pest" them cheat and cant stand them I also see this with my grandparents, but still they do not allow them to leave and force to stay with the woman or man. why? It seem to me like the fan that want to kill his Idol situation but with even less "love". It really makes me sick how can I ever leave him and trust anyone els?

Women have been forced to play the role of women twenty-four hours, and men have been forced to play the role of men twenty-four hours, which is very unnatural and certainly creates much misery in the world. There are moments when a man is soft and should be feminine. There are moments when the husbands should be the wife and the wife should be the husband, and this should be very natural. And there will be more rhythm and more harmony. If a man is not Supposed to be a man twenty-four hours, he will be more relaxed.

And if a woman is not supposed to be twenty-four hours a woman she will be more natural and spontaneous. Yes, sometimes in a rage a woman becomes more dangerous than a man, and sometimes in soft moments a man is more loving than any woman -- and these moments go on changing. Both these climates are yours; so don't think that you are becoming schizophrenic or something. This duality is part of nature. A good insight has happened to you. Don't lose it, and don't be worried that you are going schizophrenic.

This is a serious question with regards to sex offenders.
(Please read the entire blog[s] before making your decision. This will be broken up into sections to make this all fit.)

First, let me just say I am totally against sexual assaults of any kind. This question is for people to think. Not just jump to conclusions. Just think. This is based on stories that were coming out of Atlanta that sex offenders were being forced out the woods because they have no other place to live by legalities. They are not allowed to come within a certain number of feet to a child even if their assault was against a man or woman (yes there are women sex offenders).

So, the question is, should sex offenders be allowed to live wherever they want if they paid their debt to society? Should the law be revised in certain situations?

Now before you say no, think about these case scenarios below that I am about to tell you and see whether or not you answer would still be no.

Case Scenario #1-
Two teenagers are dating. They believe things are getting serious and they want to take their relationship to the next level sexually. (Before you people out there start preaching I am advocating sex between minors/teens need to check themselves. I am not and never will. But in this day and age, it IS A REALITY that it is happening.) So they decide to have sex with each other. Somehow the parents finds out and
1. The girl becomes frightened and lie, telling them she was raped or
2. The parents are upset and want to charge the male with rape because their daughter is a minor and don't care whether or not it was consensual or not. They just want to see the boy pay.
Now this teen life is forever changed and will always be labeled as a sex offender. Now, he has spent his time in jail, paid his debt to society and now is a free man with a burden. Should he be able to live where ever he wants without scrutiny? Should the law be revised for someone like this?

Case Scenario #2-
A female decides to tutor children for a little extra pay. So she tutors a few young boys and saw no problem with it. A few of the boys tried to flirt sexually with the woman but she rightfully rejected their advances. Now, one of the boys was highly offended and wanted to get back at the woman for rejecting him. He claims to his friends that he and the tutor had sexual relations and somehow it reaches his parents. So, instead of telling the truth when confronted about the rumor the boy doesn't confirm or deny the allegations. The parents feel their son has been a victim of sexual abuse from an legal adult. Charges are pressed and the woman for some reason (it happens, really) loses the case and is sent to jail and labeled as a sex offender for the rest of her life, and she will also be considered a child molester. Hence, her life is forever changed and burdened with this charge. Should she get a second chance and live where she wants without scrutiny? Should the law be revised with people in her case which later be proven unjust?

Case Scenario #3-
A man is married with children. He loves his family and is totally devoted them in every way. At his work there is a new employee that is sexually attracted to him. (Sort of think of the movie Obsessed with Beyonce in it but not exactly) The employee tries on a number of occasions to seduce the man. There is a company trip where they are set up at an hotel and their rooms are next to each other. The woman goes to the man room and the man mistakenly let the woman trying to be polite. The woman against tries to seduce the man and is rejected. Now upset, the woman is spiteful and puts a false report of sexual assault and attempted rape on the man with the police. For some reason, there is not enough to evidence to determine whether or not the woman is telling the truth or lying and the case is left up to a jury. Because the woman played the sympathetic woman card on the stand (it seriously happens people, I'm not making this up) the jury saw it her way and found the man guilty. The man, appeals while in prison, won the appeal based on the woman admitted she lied, but is still is labeled a sex offender/attempted rapist. Should this man, and people like him, get a break and start a new life? Most and likely his family would stand behind because they are so very close.

So do you still say all sex offenders should get a second chance and live wherever they want without scrutiny? Should the law change to help individuals like this so they will not be considered sex offenders anymore?

Now, let me say this. I am not forgetting about the actual sex offenders that intentionally committed crimes against victims. Even though they may have paid their debt to society, society still needs to be protected because there is no clear cut view on whether or not they have been rehabilitated. In cases of child abuse (sexual or not) should never be allowed close to children again. (Not talking about a teenager charged with chil

A woman can go sleep around, get pregnant, and have the choice to wash her hands of any responsibility by not becoming a parent. A man on the other hand is forced to be responsible for a kid he may not want (child support).

So my question is, shouldn't a guy be able to not have to pay child support if he chooses not to be a parent? Shouldn't he be able to sleep around and not have to be held accountable for his actions? Why should only women have the choice to be immune from consequences?

Why are women such hypocrites when it comes to reproductive rights? What ever happened to the "equality" they love preaching about?

ok, well my essay is about 3 mortals who made wrong decisions: Arachne, Niobe, and Narcissus. All of these mortals made a mistake and got too confident and said they were better than gods. i wrote about their stories and i had to talk about why gods in greek mythology punished mortals who acted this way. I really need a title! here is my essay:

The myths in the book, Mythology and You, describe what happened to mortals that offend the deathless gods. Gods believed that mortals should always look up to them and not question their superiority. However, some mortals thought they were better than gods. The mortal Arachne was skilled in weaving. She knew she was the best weaver of all mortals but thought she was also better than any gods. Arachne became too proud of her skill and forgot she was human. She became disrespectful and over-confident. All of Arachneas people knew her as the greatest weaver of them all. They said that Athena, the goddess of wisdom, had to have taught her how to weave. However, Arachne, being proud and insolent, denied that she had any help and insulted Athena. She then challenged Athena to a weaving contest. In the end, Arachne lost and unsuccessfully tried to hang herself. Athena felt that Arachne should be punished for her behavior and turned her into a spider, forcing her to weave forever. Athena did this because she felt that she deserved respect from mortals: a?I deserve praise from mortals, not contemptaa..My powers of revenge surely will achieve what my gifts have nota? (Rosenberg and Baker 128). Niobe, who had fourteen children, took pride of her accomplishment of having so many children. She became too proud of her children, however, and slowly grew to be unreasonable and foolish. Like, Arachne, she also thought she was a goddess. One day, Niobe overheard the Women of Thebes praising Leto, the mother goddess, and thought this was a disgrace. She gave a whole speech to the female worshippers that made it clear she thought she was far more superior to Leto. Leto, overhearing this insult, became humiliated and filled with grief. She demanded that Niobeas children be killed. Artemis and Apollo went on this mission and killed all of Niobeas children, which also caused her husband to kill himself. Niobe, now devastated, begged for mercy on the last and youngest child remaining but she was given none. As Niobe cried over her familyas bodies, she transformed into a statue and was placed on the summit of a great hill. Another mortal that became too proud of himself is Narcissus. Narcissus was a very handsome young man, though he did not know it because he was never allowed to see his own reflection. Many ladies loved him even though he did not love any back. Nemesis, goddess of retribution and vengeance, cursed Narcissus because of the pain he caused others. One day, when Narcissus was by a stream, he looked down into the water and fell in love with the image he saw; unaware that it was his own reflection. He never left the image and when he realized that what he saw was himself, he grieved over the thought that he could never love it. He cried to the gods to separate him from this image and death was brought upon him beside the stream. However, when it was time for his funeral, no one could find his body. All they found was a yellow flower. These stories illustrate that the mortals were meant to worship and obey the gods, who were much higher than them. Mortals who thought they were gods were defeated in order for the gods to keep their reputation as the best.
